EXPLORER'S AFRICA, CAPE TOWN TO DAKAR

This was a first for an expedition ship to visit the heart of West Africa. Beginning in Cape Town we sailed up the Slave Coast, stopping Luanda - a first-, visited voodoo villages and market in Togo, followed the Slave route in Benin, swam in beautiful island tropical island of Principe, and paid a heart warming visit to the newly peaceful city of Freetown.

CHILE TO TAHITI VIA EASTER AND PITCAIRN ISLANDS

This leg of the round the world cruise only went from Valparaiso, Chile to Papaete, Tahiti and included eight days at sea without a port of call. However, the ship sailed close by to Easter Island and stopped just beside Pitcairn island which was well worth it.

AROUND SOUTH AMERICA THROUGH THE STRAIT OF MAGELLAN

Sailing around South America through the Straights of Magellan was a terrific way to spend Christmas and New Years. Great people, fabulous food, and merriment amid luxury. The voyage took us to the Falklands where I spent a day with relatives, and to Puerto Madryn a city originally settled by Welsh immigrants.

As many times as I go around the Baltic I always find something new. In addition to the coastal Hanseatic cities we also stopped on Utö, a tiny Swedish gem of an island and the Åland Islands where everyone speaks Swedish but belong to Finland.

While travel is always interesting, sometimes difficult, and often emotional, this voyage focused on the WWII battlefields in Normandy – Arromanches, Omaha Beach, The US Cemetery. These poignant WWII memorials and the occupied Island of Guernsey were the highlights of the trip.

Delayed by the Icelandic volcano in the Canary Islands, we reached the fabled city of Casablanca on schedule. We explored the Medina, public markets, exquisite Mosques, grand palaces, and architecturally fantastic temples and tombs, then made our way up the Portuguese coast ending up in glittering city of Lisbon.

It is always exciting to pass through the Panama Canal. This particular small ship voyage was a fascinating mix of cultural stops, such as old Balboa and Panama City, nature visits as in Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, and just plain beautiful tropical islands.

What an exciting selection of varied and fantastic destinations this voyage was! For me the highlight was Burkina Faso, its cities, villages, Nazinga Elephant Reserve, and gentle pleasant people. It stands out in marked contrast to the urban cultures of Cape Town, Rio, and Buenos Aires.

The Baltic is a magical place with everything for nature lovers, birders, and history buffs. Visby's wonderfully preserved Medieval defensive wall stands out as a highlight of this voyage along with the walk through the Hermitage before doors were opened to the public. It became our private palace for a few hours.
