A journey to new places in the world is also a journey into our very being. If we have truly journeyed well, we reach the other side changed. Some of us more, others less. This commentary and the pictures that illustrate it are heavily skewed toward local people struggling to survive, which is a reflection of my own personal journey in life. Born under bombs, travelling through war torn Europe with parents desperately fighting to survive, scraping out an existence a muddy village outside Athens (now a middle class suburb called Paleo Faliro), buying water when our hand cranked well dried out in the summer months, raising a few rabbits for food that got rabies and had to be killed off… all of that gives me a perspective that is somewhat different but not unique. Sometimes I believe I see with the proverbial “third eye” as the Russians say, which I have always assumed was historically somehow connected to the Third Eye of Shiva in India. That Third Eye sees not with light but with an understanding that is more intuitive and spiritual than intellectual.
For this reason, this travel log focuses more on Africa and less on the glitter of Rio and the seduction of Buenos Aires. I leave it to others to explain those journeys more fully. |
