Polynesia still fascinates us, not only for its natural beauty, friendly, gentle people, and rich ancient culture, but also because of the questions it poses about human migration. Starting out somewhere in Fiji, the Ancient Polynesians populated distant islands, across thousands of miles of ocean, in exquisitely designed double hulled canoes. Women, children, sailors, tailors, dancers, singers, and priests, all came together and started a new life in faraway islands such as Tahiti, Moorea, Tongatapu and, of course, the farther from all humanity, Hawaii.
Throughout this voyage we visited these landmarks of ancient voyaging, learning about the old and the new. Through lectures and superbly organized expeditions, we not only saw and visited Polynesia, but we experienced it. Here are the highlights of our stepping through the looking glass into a world that keeps its past but lives in the present. |
